OneDrive: free up
local disk space.
Local disk space and your OneDrive account’s storage quota are different problems. Choose the operation for the problem you actually have.
Identify the storage problem
Record free space in This PC for the local drive. Separately inspect the storage usage of your OneDrive account. Removing a downloaded local copy can help the first value without reducing the account’s cloud usage.
Check sync status and whether an upload has completed before changing anything. A file that exists only on the PC does not become a verified cloud backup merely because it sits inside a sync folder.
Read the provider’s state
In OneDrive, an online-only file is represented locally but its contents are fetched when needed. A locally available file has downloaded contents. A file marked Always keep on this device is intended to remain available offline.
For supported synced files, OneDrive’s Free up space control makes local content online-only while retaining the cloud file. Delete is a different operation: deletion in a synced location can propagate to OneDrive and other devices. Use the provider’s current instructions and check that you can access the cloud copy.
Work through one folder
- Pick a completed, synced personal folder. Leave active work and pending uploads alone.
- Choose what must work offline. Keep those items available before traveling or disconnecting.
- Use OneDrive’s Free up space action on the remaining eligible items. Wait for the provider’s status change.
- Check again. Confirm local free space and the cloud copy. Do not download everything just to check a size total.
If the context-menu action is unavailable, investigate the provider’s configuration or organization policy. Do not substitute deletion to force the same result.
Understand WhimRoom’s boundary
WhimRoom can inspect Windows-connected cloud locations; it is not a direct cloud-account cleanup service. Connected-storage metadata inspection can report online-only availability. Directory enumeration may still contact the provider.
The connected-storage duplicate check uses locally available contents and leaves online-only files alone. Other operations that read content, such as opening a document, can cause the provider to download it. Read the exact selected tool’s scope before assuming that a whole-folder operation stays metadata-only.
Avoid the common wrong turn
A sync location is not automatically an independent backup. Deleting an unnecessary cloud file and making a needed file online-only require different decisions. If you need less cloud usage, review the cloud account’s files and recovery rules separately. This guide does not instruct you to purge the cloud Recycle Bin.
Continue with local storage analysis or a verified independent copy.
